The Nikon 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5 G VR is a pretty decent lens optically. Because lots of copies were sold in bundles with D600's, etc., you can find used copies for a few hundred dollars. Downside to me is mainly that it is a much more plastic, less rugged, construction than the 24-70. And of course, it isn't f/2.8.
